The big, fat MOTTO!

Since experience is always a big dilemma (the lack thereof) immediately upon graduation, especially in medical coding and billing (wanted ads always state they expect 1-2 years of experience, or more) your best bet right now, is to stick with the medical assisting program, finish it, learn all you can during your externship, and once hired, begin working in the front desk, admin area.

Once there, try find yourself a mentor who is willing to show you the ropes, and introduce you to the things you will likely still be clueless (with the limited training as a medical assistant). Hopefully they will transition you into the medical billing section of the office where you work. In any case, make your love for coding and billing your strongest asset and becoming a medical coder the highest goal. I have heard of many who received their training on the job (only!) under the guidance of a willing mentor.
